Sponsor a Village Spotlight: Davi
Davi, in Haiti, is the latest village to come under Floresta’s new Sponsor A Village Program. This program allows donors to become personally involved with one of the communities where we are working. Up to ten sponsors per village will help to provide loans, training and empowerment through their monthly gifts of $30. Sponsors will be provided with photos and regular updates as to how the members of their community are growing in the Floresta program.
Davi – The center of the village of Davi sits on a ridge in the mountains southwest of Port-au-Prince and a few miles from the Floresta office in Cherident. The village itself is spread out over several hills and valleys. Little clusters of trees on the hillsides mark the tiny homes. 66 people (44 men and 22 women) are members of the Floresta cooperative in Davi, which helps them with agricultural training, reforestation and small loans. Floresta agronomists have been teaching them to graft fruit trees, to apply more effective anti-erosion control and to compost. Davi farmers planted nearly 2000 trees last year. Floresta staff also provides discipleship opportunities for the community.
When we visited recently they had just completed their first water cistern with the Floresta program. As part of the cistern program they have begun several small community tree nurseries. The farmers of Davi are very grateful for the work of Floresta. As farmers shared their successes, one woman started to tell us how her loan had enabled her to care for her family. Midway through her story she stood up, saying, “I am so excited about what Floresta has done for me that I can’t sit down and talk about it!"
This village needs sponsors to ensure that Floresta can continue to work there. To sponsor Davi or any other village, click on the link from the Floresta homepage (www.floresta.org) or send an email to Karmyn at klaverghetta@floresta.org
