Sponsor a Village Spotlight
Become a village sponsor and follow the remarkable progress of a community as it begins to grow and transform through the work of Floresta and the love of Jesus.
The Floresta Sponsor A Village program allows donors to become personally involved with a particular community where Floresta works. Up to ten sponsors per village will help to provide loans, training and empowerment through monthly gifts of $30. Sponsors will be provided with photos and regular updates as to how the members of their community are growing in the Floresta program. They will be invited to pray for the particular needs of their village and perhaps even to visit.
In each issue of The Sower we will be spotlighting a new community in need of sponsors.
The village of Los Plátanos in the Dominican Republic consists of several hundred people. It is about five miles by dirt road from the Floresta office in Piedra Blanca, off the main highway between Santo Domingo and Santiago. Floresta recently began working there, assisting the farmers to construct and operate a community tree nursery.
Floresta is collaborating with the local farmers group, the Asociación Toñito Veña, named after father of its president, Luis Maria Veña. Luis Maria and his wife, Argentina, are both active in the association, together with many of their neighbors. During a recent visit, volunteers from Floresta USA were able to help plant pine seeds for the nursery, which currently holds over 12,000 pine, cedar and eucalyptus seedlings. Luis Maria and Argentina patiently showed the visitors how to plant the seeds in the root trainers, and then offered sugar cane to their hungry guests.
In the future Floresta will be offering loans, teaching agroforestry techniques, and providing discipleship opportunities to the people of Los Plátanos, as the program grows in this community.
Sponsors who commit to the ongoing growth of communities like Los Plátanos not only change these villages for eternity, but are the ones who make it possible for us to take our work to new communities and even new countries. To sponsor Los Plátanos, or any other village, return the enclosed postage-paid response form. |
