Floresta DR chooses new leader
This summer, after an extensive search, we were very excited when Carlos Disla Cuevas was named as the new Executive Director of Floresta Incorporada in the Dominican Republic. He replaces Eldon Garcia, who retired this spring, after 15 years of service.
Carlos is no stranger to Floresta. In 1999 while working for the Dominican Department of Agriculture, he was assigned to Floresta for nearly two years. During that time he oversaw much of the field operations and did extensive grant writing, while working as Eldon’s assistant. This experience has helped to make the transition a smooth one.
When Hipolito Mejia’s administration replaced President Fernandez in late 2000, Carlos’ assignment with Floresta ended and he was transferred to the Department of Forestry where he was responsible for tracking national forestry statistics. He left that post to join Floresta in August.
Carlos studied agricultural economics at Texas A&M. He is married to Digna, and has two grown children, Natanael and Laura. Carlos and Digna are active in planting a church in their neighborhood in Santo Domingo. He is very excited about the opportunity to work with Floresta and we are equally excited to count him as a colleague and partner in ministry.
In August, Carlos and his leadership team (Credit Manager Estela Rodriguez and Field Director Durbel Lora) came to San Diego for a week of intensive planning, prayer and discussions. We identified a number of priorities for the coming year including improving our marketing assistance and refining our discipleship program. It was an exciting time for us to reaffirm our commitment to one another and to the poor of the Dominican Republic.
Items for Prayer/Needs - The Dominican program is in urgent need of a new vehicle since their primary vehicle was wrecked earlier in the year.
Dominican Delegation do what they do best while in the US - plant trees!
While they were in the US in August, Carlos & Durbel (pictured) along with Estela, Armando, and a host of Floresta volunteers, planted trees with volunteer coordinator Karmyn Laverghetta. Thank you for your dedication to improving our world!
