CARBON OFFSETTING CONSULTANT
POSITION SUMMARY: Restoring Eden and Floresta are seeking an innovative individual to conduct a study of the emerging carbon trading market. Rapidly increasing awareness of our changing climate has motivated many individuals and institutions to consider ways of reducing their environmental footprint and promote tree planting and other carbon sequestering activities. Floresta, through it's work with farmers in the developing world, and Restoring Eden, through it's work with Christian colleges in the United States, are well-positioned to promote carbon trading, linking carbon credit producers (farmers) to carbon credit consumers (US colleges). The contractor will be responsible for conducting a study to examine the feasibility of this market linkage and designing products suitable to both producers and consumers.
GENERAL FUNCTION:
To undertake a study on the feasibility of developing a Floresta carbon sequestration/trading product suitable for the Christian Colleges and/or the wider Christian market (either individuals or institutions) that can be marketed and sold via Restoring Eden and/or Floresta.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES :
-research market to determine value of carbon sequestered in Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) projects such as tree planting and agroforestry
-determine how to quantify carbon in the field and how to best link producers/farmers to international or local carbon markets, with the main focus on US Christian colleges
-determine appropriate payment schemes for compensating producers/farmers and coordinate with Floresta in order to meet community development goals
-establish contact with interested colleges and determine their capacity for purchasing carbon credits
-Additional markets for selling carbon credits should be at least suggested and researched as time allows
-contractor will work off site, and maintain contact with Floresta and Restoring Eden via e-mail and telephone.
-work reports will be submitted bi-weekly
-by the end of the fourth month of the contract, submit report to Floresta and Restoring Eden including research findings, preliminary product suggestions, and 2 month product development plan
-by the end of the 5th month of the contract, submit a work plan to produce, market, and sell the product(s)
QUALIFICATIONS:
-3+ years experience
-experience in successful entrepreneurial product development, or other similar entrepreneurial experience.
-Bachelors in business, marketing, or related field
-understanding or experience in conducting feasibility studies
-understanding of poverty and natural resource management issues amongst small scale farmers in developing countries
-understanding of emerging carbon trading markets
-understanding of and ability to comply with mission statements of Restoring Eden and Floresta
-ability to work independently
-ability to work with college administrations, professors and students
-willingness to travel, both in and outside of the United States
-knowledge of Spanish a plus, although not required
WORK ENVIRONMENT: work off-site, some travel involved
